Chickpeas with Ground Beef

(Kıymalı Nohut)

Chickpeas with Ground Beef
1 can of chickpeas (540 ml), rinsed, drained
1 onion, finely chopped
2-3 tbsp olive oil or 1 tbsp butter
3-4 tbsp regular or medium ground beef
2 tbsp crushed tomatoes, canned
1 cup warm water
1 tsp salt
1 tsp cumin
Pepper for taste

Cook the onion and ground beef in a pot. Then add the remaining ingredients and continue to cooking at medium heat with the lid half-covered for another 10-15 minutes.

Chickpeas with Ground Beef is very easy to make, and it tastes great, especially when served with Pilaf with Orzo.

* This is a vegetarian dish (don't use the ground beef).

Hi Binnur

I'd like to thank you for creating such a wonderful site. I am a Turkish woman from London. I have been looking for a decent Turkish cookbook published in English for ages and am extremely happy to have found your site. I'm looking forward to finally cooking the meals that I miss and know so well - and hope getting them right too!

All the best

Susen

Adding very little I mean like a quarter of a table spoon of biber salcasi (unless you want to feel the heat add more :) ) adds great taste as well.

Hi Ayhan,
Thank you for the tip. Adding more heat definitely suits Chickpeas...:)

Hello
I don't normally post comments but . . . I just have to.
I am an Australian married to a Palestinean and we live in Australia. I went to my local supermarket which happens to be run by Turkish people. They had a free lovely poster of foods, 30 pictures, all looking absolutely delicious. mmmm I thought, great, each day of Ramadan, what to cook. mmmm The problem was that it is entirely in Turkish!!!! My husband had the idea to check the internet.
Now my new friend Binnur, I am speechless, well not really because I have been telling everyone about your site. It's fantastic really well done, great job. God bless you and your family you are obviously a very special person. We all apreciate your efforts. I've now tried 4 dishes and I just can't wait for my next meals.
Thank you so so so much

Hi Binnur,

This is a delicious Turkish dish and one of my favorites. I have one simple question. What is the purpose of using warm water to cook the ingredients and not cold water?

Thank you,

Steph

Hi Steph,
The meat gets harder if you add cold water, it is kind of shock treatment:)
Even without meat the dish lose its taste with the cold water.

Hi Binnur,

How many grams our ounces do you mean by "1 can of chickpeas"? It doesn't seem clear.

hi binnur.

when we cook the ground beef and onions, do we cook them with the olive oil or do we add the olive oil later with the rest of the ingredients?

thanks you in advance.

At 2:39 PM, Blogger Binnur said...

Hi,
The regular or medium ground beef has enough fat in it so no need to cook with the oil:) Add the olive oil later with the rest of the ingredients.

We ate this dish a lot in Turkey last summer, and I'm glad to come across the recipe here. So simple to make, and my whole family likes it. Half of us are vegetarian, so I make two batches at the same time, one with and one without meat. It's great both ways.
