Okra with Chicken

(Tavuklu Bamya)

Okra with Chicken
1 chicken breast, cooked in water and cut in chunks
375 g (drained weight) canned okra, rinsed
2 tbsp canned chickpeas, rinsed
8-10 cherry tomatoes, cut in half
50 ml extra virgin olive oil (half for cooking, half for after cooking)
1/2 cup hot water
1 tsp salt

Sauce:
Juice of one lemon
1 garlic clove, mashed with salt
1 tsp dry mint

Place all the ingredients in a medium-size pot. Cover and cook for about 20 minutes at medium-low heat. Turn the heat off, pour the rest of the olive oil along with the mixed sauce ingredients. Mix them carefully so that the okra doesn't get mashed. Serve it hot or warm.

Can I cook this with beef or lamb as well? Have you ever tried it? Thanks for the wonderful recipes!

Hi Binnur
Can I try this with canned okra? It's hard to find fresh okra here.
Thank you

Hi Ipek,
Thank you for the warning, because it should be canned okra, I just
forgot to add it, but now it is up there:)
Same here I never saw fresh okra in Toronto, but I can find Turkish
Okra in a can at the supermarket.

What a wonderful website. My best friend is Turkish and missing the food from home. We live in California and can get fresh okra. How do I prepare the recipe with the fresh okra? Thank you so much for your recipes.

First wash them gently. Then cut off the tops, but don't cut them
straight off - instead like a dome shape. This cutting style prevents
the creamy liquid inside the okra from coming out. The rest is the
same. But I am not exactly sure of the cooking time, it may take a
little bit more, just check it frequently towards the end to see if it's done :)

HI Binnur!!!
My ancestors are from the Mardin/Midyat area of Turkey and I grew up with plenty of turkish food...I must say your recipies are out of this world!!
I wanted to know if we may use Frozen okra in thie recipie? It is a very common thing to find here in NY/NJ...I have not really seen the canned version...only frozen and fresh! I am having some inlaws over tomm and this seemed like a nice dish to make with the Chicken with white sauce.
Also-did you mean the juice of a whole lemon for "1 lemon juice"? or a whole cup!!!???
Tx si much for all the beautiful effort into this website...it is a jem!

Hi Jem,
Thank you:) Sure you can use frozen okra instead of canned one. I meant the juice of a whole lemon for "1 lemon juice" not a whole cup:)

Hi Binnur,

What is the cooking time if you use Fresh Okra? I buy it here in Turkey from the local Bazaar.
