Tahini & Grape Molasses

(Tahin Pekmez)

Tahini & Grape Molasses
1 cup tahini (ground sesame seed paste)
1/2 cup grape molasses (thick grape juice syrup)

Place the tahini in a deep bowl, then slowly add grape molasses and mix them well. This traditional Turkish dessert should be eaten with Turkish Bread (if not available, fresh French or Italian bread) for breakfast or as a dessert. We especially like to eat Tahin Pekmez on cold winter days, it gives energy and is very filling. My mother used to say "if you have it every morning, you will never feel the cold".

Tahini
Tahini is very healthy, does not have cholesterol and lasts long. It also contains B vitamins and protein like milk.

Grape Molasses
Grape Molasses are a good source of energy and carbohydrates because of the high sugar content. It is ideal for daily doses of calcium, iron, potassium and magnesium plus it contains lots of minerals.

You can purchase Tahini (Tahin) and Grape Molasses (Pekmez) from Turkish or Middle Eastern Grocery Stores or online at Tulumba.com.

Hi Saeedeh,
It is nice to know that it is known in Iran as well. We always have
Tahini & Grape Molasses especially winter time even here (North
America). Turkish Groceries always sell them. I think we still love to
eat our traditional food:)

Dear Binnur,

I love this!!

My father loves this so much, that in the early years when he couldn't easily find Tahin or Pekmez, he used to mix peanut butter with honey as a substitute.

Keep up the great work..

Sidika

Hi Sidika,
We're lucky tahin and pekmez are easily found, even in North America:)
What a clever substitute - mixing peanut butter & honey:)

Merhaba Binur,

I would love a recipe to make my own pekmez. Do you have any recipes on hand for this?

Cok tesekuler

Hi Kathy,
I never made my own pekmez, it is a kind of a long process. Pekmez can be made of grape, mulberry...and needs a lot of sunshine to get the thickness of it. The ones sold in jars are very easy to have for me:)

Do you bake the mixture in the oven after mixing or eat it cold? What I ate in Istanbul -- Energy Bomb -- had been baked. Thank you.

Hi,
What you have had in Istanbul is Tahini Helva in The Oven (Guvecte Tahin Helvasi). I've already posted it which is under Dessert Recipes section.

Dear Binnur,
I have found a Tahin/Pekmez combination in one of the store close by. A company called TAHINELLA, Sweet Tahini Spread is producing in Queens, New York. Their web site is www.tahinella.com. They also have different flavors, they use organic nuts. I have tried Almond. It was a delicious.
Thanks again
Kevin

So excited to see your post! I've been looking for this since returning from Turkey last month. I didn't know it was grape molasses. Using carob molasses now - the consistency is different, but delicious!
