Lamb Stew with Fennel

(Etli Rezene - Marmara Region)

Lamb Stew with Fennel
150 gr lamb, cut in cubes
1 + 1/2 cup warm water
1 fennel bulb, trimmed and thinly sliced vertically - rinsed the fronds
1 medium sized onion, chopped
4-5 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
Salt
Pepper

Sauce:
1 tbsp flour, all purpose
1 tbsp lemon juice

Cook the lamb cubes with their own juice. Then add 1 cup hot water and cook over low heat until the lamb pieces are tender.

Add the onion and olive oil, cook for about 2-3 minutes. Then add the fennel, 1/2 cup water, salt and pepper. Cover and cook for about 8-10 minutes over medium heat.

Mix the flour and lemon juice in a small bowl. Take 4-5 spoon of juice of the dish and pour into the bowl. Whisk them well. Slowly pour this mixture over the dish, stir. Cover and simmer for about 5 minutes.

Sprinkle the fronds over the tops, then serve the Lamb Stew with Fennel while still hot.

Hi Binnur,

The dish looks tempting as usual. I love all your recipes and they are simple to cook for a person like me who doesn't have much time to do housework.

I have never tasted Fennel with Lamb. I know that Fennel is used commonly in herbal teas, which is good for your digestion system.

Do you know where I can buy Fennel bulbs in the U.S.?

Best Wishes,

Stephanie

Hi Stephanie:)
You can find the fennel bulbs at the supermarkets:) You should check the roots vegetables section. Fennel is a member of the carrot family:)

Hi,
I found some information about the fennel bulbs on the internet for you;
What are fennel bulbs?
Fennel is an aromatic herb and a member of the carrot family. It has a large pale green bulb, celery-like stems and feathery leaves. Sliced thinly, the fennel bulb can be used in salads or served with other vegetables and a dip. Uncooked fennel has a mild licorice flavor and crunchy texture. When fennel is cooked, the flavor becomes more delicate and the texture softens. Fennel can be sauteed, braised, baked and added to soups or stews. The feathery leaves have an even milder flavor and can be used in soups and salads or as a garnish.
Greetings:)

Some supermarkets label fennel as 'anise'. This is a photo of fennel bulbs:
